Edward Cornell Acting Classes Resume

Scene study classes

Scene study classes in groups of six will resume Thursday evening January 26 and places may be claimed now. A student is asked to commit to eight two-hour classes at a cost of $220 per person for the eight weeks.    Students begin with a monologue and then join with a partner to work on a scene. Scenes and monologues are chosen either from Shakespeare or modern classics of the last hundred years and are selected in consultation with the student to meet particular goals. The work can be demanding and students are encouraged to work with their partners between classes. Ted is available for consultation outside of class and the studios can be used for scene rehearsal by arrangement. Additional meeting days, perhaps on the weekend are under consideration. Individual and Paired Study

Opportunities for individual and paired study at a basic rate of $100 per hour are also offered. Discounts are available for students, seniors and by special arrangement. These classes include spatial and movement work, character study and vocal training as well as monologue and scene study. Courses of study can be designed to meet particular needs and challenges.

The Method

The teaching philosophy is eclectic and need based, with a foundation in what is commonly called the Method.    Mr. Cornell trained at the Yale Drama School with Stella Adler and pursued a career in New York as a director before moving to the Adirondacks. He was an early associate of Joseph Papp at the Public Theatre and taught acting at NYU, Circle in the Square, Hofstra University, Ohio University and The Actors Studio. He is an Obie Award winner. Former professional associates include Ellen Burstyn, Olympia Dukakis, Raul Julia, Al Pacino, & Martin Sheen.

The work is rigorous, offering an opportunity for meaningful self-examination and dramatic change. It has proven useful not only to actors but to writers, professionals and students.

 

Columbus Day Weekend at the Art Farm

The Boquet Valley Studio Tour brought many vistors to the art farm over the course of three days. There is a nice account on the Lake Placid tourism blog:

It seems almost accidental as you drive along on Sayre Road in Wadhams, NY. I crested a hill and found myself facing a rough-yet-elegant steel sculpture poised in a panoramic and rustic Adirondack farmscape. There's an eye-rubbing "what did I just stumble on" moment as you approach Crooked Brook Studios. The sweeping vista of the mountains, and the lines of trees are punctuated by these artifacts that run the spectrum from unadorned and outmoded farm equipment to, well, something else, as if the machinery, put out to pasture, began to think "is this really all there is?" And clearly, it isn't all. The machines, the pieces, the containers, the barns – the very land itself – seems to be caught up in an evolution toward a profound expression.

The pieces emerge from landscape rather than intruding on it. There is an easy flow when you walk the farm and observe the industrial textures against this natural landscape. As I walked the low rise from the parking area to the barn, a favorite Cornell sculpture rose into view: "The Angel of Inerrancy Conveying Well-meaning Souls to Hell". It's a large, intricate and powerful piece at sixteen feet long almost fourteen feet high. It was recently featured in Adirondack History Center Museum retrospective of Cornell's work, "Inside the Landscape," occupying the Museum's front lawn for several months. Cornell first began work on "The Angel" back in 2004 with his son Noah, when the two "used their tractor to pull a substantial piece of twelve foot long, three foot diameter piping made of quarter inch sheet iron out of the swamp and then put a bend in its already belabored shape by twisting it around a tree," said Cornell. "These awesome sections of unusually heavy pipe found occasionally in our area are remnants of the original power generating turbines of Wadhams that supplied power to the mines in Port Henry," said Cornell. The piece is both of the landscape, but also carves shapes and forms out of it's surroundings, like many of the sculptures on the Art Farm. Cornell said he hopes that the sculpture, in its present location overlooking the pond, "will hopefully encourage visitors to contemplate the long, slow journey of the well-meaning souls."

After exploring the farm I headed into the barn-that-is-not-a-barn that serves as a gallery to check out some large canvases and a number of less element-resistant three-dimensional pieces that hang on the walls and from the lofted 20-foot plus high rafters. Aside from being mostly empty space and a massive wall of windows on one end, it's still very much a barn. It's an inviting space that encourages you to spend time with the work. Each piece is given its due – in that way, more like the lobby of a large metro museum than a gallery. There was a table filled with sand where Ted invited people to participate in creating their own piece of sand art with a collection of had-been cracker packages, honey dispensers and bottle caps. It was very therapeutic to play in the sand with the simple implements, and Ted remarked that it was, in fact, used as a kind of therapy. I thought it was very much in his character to invite you over to tour his studio, and then deflect your attention to a pile of sand for you to play in instead. The studio tour was not the only event Columbus Day weekend. The Dragon Press Bookstore in Westport had an event featuring out-of-town writers who all trooped over to visit.

Much Ado in Ballard Park was a hit with Athena Roth

In her Lake Placid tourism blog, Athena says:

Setting "Ado" in the world of baseball was a perfect match to the story and to the energy of the production directed by Daniel Billet – who also played the role of Don Pedro. The talent and great chemistry of this cast – the energetic verbal sparring between Beatrice and Benedick, the effervescent longing between Hero and Claudio– reminded us again of why we love this classic piece. The cast also featured a fantastic appearance of local artist of former Public Theatre fame, Ted Cornell. "I hope that people will walk away from this play with a love of America, Shakespeare, and baseball," said Treadwell. I think that Treadwell did just that and also accomplished the enormous task of getting a community together to experience wonderful professional Shakespearean theatre on a Sunday afternoon.

Much Ado About Nothing was performed on September 4th by the American Studio Theatre in Ballard Park in Westport, New York. The production featured Carrie Treadwell as Beatrice and Kirby Grubb as Benedick.

American Studio Theatre's production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing on September 4 at 2 PM in Ballard Park

I hope you are making plans to see American Studio Theatre's production of Shakespeare's incredible Much Ado About Nothing on Sunday, September 4 at 2 PM in Ballard Park in Westport, New York.  This is the company founded by Carrie Treadwell and friends which has gathered in Westport every year for the last ten years for one extraordinary weekend of intense inspired concentration to rehearse and present for one performance only one the bard's classics.  

Anyone who saw last year's Two Gentlemen of Verona or the magical Henry V of two years ago will every forget those shows or fail to be there this Sunday.  Carrie is playing the sharp witted, unstoppable Beatrice who finally meets and makes her match.  Dan Billets who gave us last years hilarious and inventive Two Gents directs, and your blogger returns as the mysterious Friar Frances.  Don't miss it.

Power has been restored to the Art Farm and Crooked Brook Studios.  Thanks to NYSEG and the crews and managers who have been working night and day -- literally -- to restore our electric power.

Their skill and dedication is fundamental to modern life in the Adirondacks.  We who make all or part of our living on line or on computer should never forget.

Following Hurricane Irene, there is no power at the Art Farm.  So for the moment, there is no Internet connection nor refrigeration. The phone works.  

The latest word is that we may be without power for as much as a week. Life goes on.

The Art Farm at Crooked Brook Is Open

The Art Farm at Crooked Brook Studios in Wadhams will be open for the first time this season Friday, August 19 from 2 to 4 PM.

Paintings, drawings, and smaller constructions by the Farm's proprietor Edward Cornell will be on display and offered for sale.

Thereafter the Farm will be open by appointment and on certain days to be announced.  Announcements will be by email and may also be viewed on the website crookedbrookstudios.com.   Appointments may be made by calling me at 518 962 4386.

There will be a reception and party to celebrate the reopening of the Studios and the Farm on a date to be announced after Labor Day.

Real-Time Magic of the Mundane: Williamstown, 1964

I remember theatres as dark, warm places, near the action, full of promise, empty seats waiting to be filled and deep silences I know how to light up.  The Adams Memorial Theatre at Williams College, a big stage with about four hundred red plush seats in a shallow rake, is the first theatre I came to know well.  I know the way into the ceiling where the lights are, the way up to the hanging grid eighty feet above the stage at the top of the high tower where you kick the shivs around and where the ropes and heavy wires run for the raising and lowering of the sometimes huge painted canvas backdrops.  This is a classic wing and drop theatre as I later learned in drama school, brought to perfection in nineteenth century Italy to fulfill the demands of grand opera as practiced by Verdi and his like, capable of taking audiences anywhere in space and time by running scenery on carts in from the wings and on drops down from the above, a technology functioning to this day on Broadway stages and around the world.

I remember a night in Williamstown, or more likely one very early morning, we were rigging a backdrop intended for the Brush Up Your Shakespeare number in Kiss Me Kate, There were four or five of us hanging old flats from a pipe we had lowered to a level of about twelve feet above the stage.  The idea was to represent a backstage space where the two charming thugs would be inspired to launch into their soft shoe.  Each individual flat, made of canvas stretched taught on a stout wooden frame and hung with simple iron hardware from the pipe that stretched across the stage, weighed at the most a hundred pounds, but our plan was to hang up to a couple of dozen of them from the pipe to create a wall.  We had therefore placed more than a ton of lead weights in one of the arbors in the stage left rigging, and when we had lowered in the pipe, the arbor had ascended eighty feet above the stage, locked there and waiting to counterbalance the load we were now in the process of attaching to the pipe.

As we worked the pipe began to move, very slowly inching upward.  We froze.  Each of us knew without speaking what was happening.  The clamps on the wire lines holding the stack of lead weights were slipping, losing their grip.  The pipe began rising faster and suddenly seemed to be flying upward.  We ran.  I jumped into the orchestra pit, my friend John leaped all the way from the stage across the pit into the audience.  The rack of weights hit the iron arbor rail at stage level with a bang that made out ears ring and burst open throwing the weights about.  High in the air the pipe and the few flats we had attached, flew into the steel grid and broke apart. Bits of lumber and hardware fell and wind-milled down from the top of the grid, smashing onto the now deserted stage. 

Then silence, followed by gasps and cries and laughter.  I can't recall the consequences.  I imagine we got it cleaned up by daylight.  John had sprained his ankle, but we rigged another pipe, with certain modifications, in time for dress rehearsal.  I learned once again that the show must go on.  I learned why theatrical workmans' comp insurance rates are, with farming, the most expensive.  And I learned where boyish adolescent pleasure had a place in adult life.

Earlier that summer I remember the arrival of the equity actors suddenly rocking the place with their noisy laughter, high spirits and incredibly vulgar language.  They seemed larger than life, a breed apart.  Olympia Dukakis, Frank Langella, Lou Zorich, Tony Capidolupo were none of them famous then or at least not very, but we apprentices knew who they were and what they were.  The real thing.  Watching them in rehearsal, or from backstage in performance, and even, astonishingly, on stage with them in the chorus or in butler's weeds handing one a envelope or a teacup was to know the real-time magic of the mundane turning bright, significant, electric, awesome before our eyes, in our hands.
